Welcome to the last series of Pride month! All this week, I will be sharing blog posts featuring different LGBTQ artists in a range of disciplines. Check out all the LGBTQ Creatives worthy of support here!
Who is Chase Erwin?
Chase is a 34-year-old gay independent author (he/him) based in Austin, Texas. Chase began writing novels a decade ago and is currently working on the third novel in his fantasy series, “The Memoirs of Abel Mondragon.” The book series’ protagonist is a gay man based off of Chase’s first Dungeons & Dragons character—very fantasy-esque!
Writing and Identity
Chase shared his use of self-expression through writing these novels and how his protagonist embodied some of his past’s challenges, like bullying and loss. Although he finds that LGBT representation was less of a priority because of this, Chase notes that he makes a point of making non-straight sexualities a non-issue in his stories. While he recognizes this might not be the best means of representation, he values the escape a story can provide for LGBTQ people in the real world who may need this type of acceptance.
Additionally, Chase’s novels include a disabled non-binary character. At first, he questioned whether it would be overstepping to write such a character as a cis man himself. Without meeting any discouragement there, he went forward with researching non-binary identities by reading about the issues nonbinary people come across in their day-to-day lives through Twitter. After the publication of his second novel in the series, Chase’s sibling-in-law came out as genderfluid! He plans to consult his family member a little bit as he continues the story of the non-binary character.
